For our sample project, we chose a natural white wool fiber to use as the base, and randomly added a selection of dyed fibers and other additives to create a colorful batt that won#x27;t become muddy when all of the fibers are spun into a yarn.

Put the wool in mesh bags with zippers. Fill the machine with HOT water and laundry or animal soap, then add the bags of fleece. If you have really greasy wool lots of lanolin, you may want to add 3/4 cup soda ash to the first wash when you add the water and soap. Push the fleece down gently into the water a few times, then let it sit for 20. I dyed the wool nepps in a variety of bright colours and mixed them with undyed nepps. These were carded into the fibre before it was spun to produce a subtle tweed effect. The yarn is a blend of 84 British alpaca and 16 local Shetland fleece with wool nepps. The yarn has been woollen spun for a lofty handle. The Romney is a dream to spin, and whether this is all due to the fibre, or a measure of my hand carding I am not sure. My plyed yarn is coming out at 13wpi. So this should be a DK weight. I will try knitting it on 4 or 4.5mm needles. A bad photo of my WPI test - I needed 3 hands! The yarn is quite lively. I will post the knit later on. Ok.

I also threw in a few random pieces of fiber that I thought would just add some accent colors. After having so much fun spinning this batt, I decided it wasnt enough fiber for a good. Spinning the tweed yarn is easy and fun. I use a supported longdraw, letting plenty of twist into the drafting zone to grab onto the nepps. Some extra twist in plying helps keep the nepps in place as you finish the yarn. Wash, dry, a few quick snaps, and the yarn is ready to be knitted or woven into beautiful rare-breed tweed fabric. After carding to align the fibers the wool is carefully and evenly rolled back off the card. This fibers is spun from the end to create woolen yarn.
